Data for GP branch surgeries in England and Wales.
Data for GPs and GP Surgeries has traditionally been supplied by the NHS Business Services Authority (BSA); however, this data only includes main surgeries - the more peripheral branch surgeries that these practices often run are not included in the NHS BSA data. It is the responsibility of the ODS to maintain Branch Surgery data, however, branch surgery codes are created at the request of a Practice/Sub ICB therefore the data should not be taken as an exhaustive list of branch surgeries.
The 'Branch Surgery' organisation type is also used to identify COVID Vaccination sites operated by Primary Care Networks. The COVID vaccination sites are also parented by a GP Practice (lead).
How Data is Maintained
Requests for Branch Surgery codes are logged with ODS by users within the Integrated Care Board (ICB), Sub ICB Location, parent GP Practice, Commissioning Support Unit (CSU) or Primary Care Services England (PCSE).
Requests for Branch Surgery codes with a COVID Vaccination Centre non primary role must be submitted via the COVID Vaccination Programme/Foundry system by NHS England regional leads. This includes requests for new codes as well as amendments to existing PCN vaccination site codes.
Parent practice to branch surgery - The NHS BSA relies on their contacts within Sub ICB Locations to inform them of updates and additions to GP Practices within their area. This updating is carried out to the NHS BSA’s systems on an ongoing basis, with the NHS BSA supplying updated files to ODS to upload to our database.
