Data Description
Non-NHS Organisations Independent Providers: Registered and Non-Registered Non-NHS Organisations in England, Wales, Northern Ireland, Isle of Man and Channel Islands. Where a record appears to be applied to an individual, it should be seen as representing them in an organisational capacity. Examples of the types of records included are independent hypnotherapists, medical consultants working privately outside of the NHS, nursing homes, private practices and clinics. Generally, an Independent Provider Code is required due to the organisation having had some contact with the NHS; for instance, having taken a referral and therefore requiring a code that can be used to identify them within NHS systems.
Since 2021, ODS have restricted the number of new Non-NHS Organisation codes being issued. Instead, we provide Independent Sector Healthcare Provider (ISHP) codes as these are very similar in definition, but are able to support site codes, unlike Non-NHS Org codes. We found that over time, Non-NHS Orgs would identify requirements for site codes, which would mean them having to migrate to new ISHP/ISHP Site codes. Therefore it is better to allocate an ISHP code from the outset (only exception currently being Medicine Suppliers and Hospices).
How Data is Maintained
Organisations contact ODS themselves to request their own Independent Provider code. As with most NHS organisation codes, ODS rely on the individuals and organisations that are assigned the codes to advise them of changes in details.
